Spirituality and How To Sweep The Old Life Out

“Oh, how I wish there was a ‘do over’ button in my head.” Haven’t we all felt that way? At one time or another in our life? Thoughts of past deeds. Commissions. Omissions. Errors. And maybe things that were just plain wrong? The thoughts of them running round and round in my head? Causing so much pain and misery? There is some really bad news! If nothing is done, things will not get any better. In fact, they will seem to get worse.

The really good news is that there is such a button in my head! It is called the Program of AA. Let’s be more specific. It is the “One day at a time” part of the Program. Let’s be even more specific. This is a very simple program for very complicated folks. Let’s remember that it is what it is. Don’t look for hidden meanings in any part of the program. Keep it simple. “One day at a time” does NOT have to start at 12:01AM. It can start any time that you choose. This is a very simple program. If you are miserable at 3:16PM because of some past problems or future anxiety, your day can start at 3:17PM.

What does all of this mean in real life? It means this. We live in the now. Now, I am Happy, Joyous, and Free. I am not bogged down by past misadventures or events. Nothing can be done to change the past. Ditto, as to how I can influence the future. What I can do is realize this. I can also continue working the 12 Steps. And only to the best of my ability. When I do this, the misery and despair leave in a hurry. When I work the inventory and amends steps, the past is no longer a dark, sick secret. We are only as sick as our secrets. When I work the Program, I rest assured that the next thing is the next right thing.

Yesterday is a canceled check. Tomorrow is a promissory note. The only cash that we have is NOW. So, JUST DO IT! Then, start enjoying a life that is Happy, Joyous, and Free! God bless you all!
