Spirituality and Easy Does It

“Easy does it” is a slogan that I have seen since coming into the program. It is now one of my favorites.  After all, this is a very simple program for very complicated folks. I would try to complicate issues. Many times, not even without knowing it. I would try to figure out how everything worked. But I was admonished quickly by one of my early sponsors. “3 finger Freddie” would wave his stubs where his fingers had been under my nose. He would tell me to “Utilize not analyze!” I finally asked him why he would say this. He said that if I could figure it out, I would probably think that I was able to control it. And then he asked me how well I was doing with control. Especially when I came into the program. How uncomplicated was my life? Point taken!

This was after about 6 of them who I had drank with and fought with over the years lined up and approached me at my first meeting. This was at what became my Home Group in Brightmoor, NW Detroit. I thought the lineup was to continue the brawls. Why? Firstly, they had disappeared from my life for a while. Secondly, I was shocked to be approached by them. Especially, without blood being in their eyes. They told me to “First, sit down. After that, to shut up. Finally, to listen.” This was while putting me down into a chair. For some reason. I sat down. I shut up. And, in addition, I listened.

These men, who had been true antagonists to me while in the madness, DEMANDED that they would be my sponsors. Hence, they were no longer complicated messes. They were beautiful, uncomplicated, simple loving men who now wanted to really help me. God puts people, places, and things in our lives for a reason. He blessed me with these sponsors who, for some reason, I felt trust for almost instantly. They taught me by living “Easy does it!” It has worked greatly for me for over 45 years, now. Simple as apple pie!

Today, I still try to live by Easy Does It. I don’t wish to complicate things any more than they already are. I don’t have the need to be in control of anyone or anything. (Not that I could control something outside myself anyway.) Easy does it is no longer just a sign on the walls of an AA meeting room. It is a way of life for me. For this, I am grateful. I am also happy. Also, joyous. And free from all mind altering substances. I was none of the above before.

How much easier could it get than just using the shortened version of the 3rd Step. Saying “God help me.” And then JUST DO IT!
