is not impossible, even for an alcoholic.
“I always feel so good when I leave a meeting but then things seem to slip back into chaos.” “Why do I have to go to a meeting in order to feel good and then it all goes out the window when I am not at a meeting?”
Wehave talked about this before and it merits revisiting. Remember when we discussed how powerful our thoughts are and how they influence our actions?
Everything begins with a thought. When we are at a meeting, we are thinking positive thoughts and feeling grateful for how we are feeling at the time. Why not think these same thoughts between meetings?
If you have a problem with this, start small.
If you momentarily start to stumble but catch yourself first, say “Thank you, God.” If a car is coming toward you on a road or street and starts to come across the center but then corrects, say “Thank you, God”.
If you have a bad thought about someone and catch yourself, say “Thank you, God.” If a negative situation arises and you do not rant and rave and the situation dissipates, say “Thank you, God.”
Try it for a day and remember you can start your day over any time you want to so you can start it right after doing the above even if it is bedtime.
Soon, this will be an automatic response to adversity and you will find yourself Happy, Joyous, and Free, no matter who is on your case or in your face.
As is said in The Promises, “We will be able to intuitively handle situations that used to baffle us.” This approach has worked for countless other people in and out of AA and it can and will work for you.
How can it work for you?
It can work very well for you if you work the program every day.
And the kicker is that you don’t have to work it perfectly. Only to the best of your ability.
There. That takes a lot of the pressure that is on you off. This truly is a simple program for complicated folks. So, lighten up! Relax and enjoy life again. Thank you, God!
