Just what is your monster within? Uncertainty? Anger? Inability to love? Inability to talk with others? Cursing? Can’t make a decision? Fear of getting too close with anyone? Just general fear that can not be defined?
My monster is alcoholism! Alcoholism includes all of the above and much, much more. When in the madness, I would wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat and not even know what I was afraid of.
And, all the while, I figured that I was afraid of no one or nothing. I believed that if I would ever show fear while in the streets, I would have been eaten alive.
Whatever your monster is, just know that it can be dealt with successfully. Is your monster your pet and you feed it or is it your enemy and you don’t know quite how to deal with it?
There is an answer that will work for you if only you let it. First, let’s see what’s what with an answer for you. The opposite of fear is not courage or bravery. Not guts or anything like it.
The opposite of fear is Faith. Yes! No matter how big your problem is, your Higher Power is bigger!
The AA 3rd Step says “Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.”
I choose to use the shortened version of the 3rd Step, simply saying “God, help me,” and going on with my business. It has worked for me for 46 years now and it can work for you, too, if you let it!
As soon as I began using this version of the 3rd Step, my life became much more manageable. I say “God, help me,” get out of His way and let Him, and He does. It hasn’t failed me yet.
I don’t always like the way that it turns out. Oh, why? Because I didn’t think of it or it is different that I would have handled it, the RIGHT thing always happens after I ask God for help. Thank you, God!
