Bill W. says in As Bill Sees It: “It has often been said of A.A. that we are interested only in alcoholism. That is not true. We have to get over drinking in order to stay alive. But anyone who knows the alcoholic personality by firsthand contact knows that no true alky ever stops drinking permanently without undergoing a profound personality change.”
Bill goes on in his Twelve and Twelve: “We thought “conditions” drove us to drink, and when we tried to correct these conditions and found that we couldn’t do so to our entire satisfaction, our drinking went out of hand and we became alcoholics.”
What he is saying is that if we change our thinking, we can stay stopped from drinking. That is why only the first half of the First Step is the ONLY mention of alcohol in all of the 12 Steps. The other 11 ½ are all about our thinking. Stay with us and learn how many of us have changed our thinking and now live truly Happy, Joyous, and Free lives. The great thing is that you will also see that, if we can do this, you can too. Just remember: Change your thinking, change your life! God bless you!
